Charles Moore (25 March 1724–19 August 1801) was a physician and public official, and a member of the American Philosophical Society, elected in 1768. He was born in Maryland, where he studied medicine, possibly with his physician brother (and fellow APS member) Samuel Preston Moore, before relocating to Philadelphia in 1747. A year later, Charles voyaged to London and Edinburgh to continue his studies. Upon receiving his M.D. degree from Edinburgh University in 1752, he returned to Philadelphia and started a medical practice. In 1757 he assumed William Franklin’s recently vacated post as Clerk of the Assembly after his twin brother Thomas found its duties too onerous. Charles was annually re-elected to the position until he resigned it in 1776. In 1773 he was chosen to succeed Cadwalader Evans as an attending physician at the Pennsylvania Hospital, and in 1774 he served as a physician with the Society for Inoculating the Poor against Smallpox. He was also a donor to the Hospital and to the Silk Society. When the Revolutionary War broke out, Moore relocated his family to the countryside. He was elected a fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1787. (PI)
