Benjamin Workman (447)

Election date: 1785

Benjamin Workman (?–?) was an educator, and a member of the American Philosophical Society, elected in 1785. Maybe born in Ireland, Workman taught mathematics at the College of Philadelphia (1784-1788), invented mathematical instruments, and wrote one of the earliest American handbooks on accounting. He also published works on arithmetic and geography, and studied eclipses. It is believed that he also wrote anti-federalist essays under the pseudonym “the Philadelphiensis” in opposition to the ratification of the US Constitution in 1787.
