Robert Patterson Sr. (406)
Election date: 1783Robert Patterson, Sr. (30 May 1743–22 July 1824) was an educator, and a member of the American Philosophical Society, elected in 1783. Born on a farm in County Down, Ireland, Patterson excelled in his early schooling, however his family lacked the funds to send him to a university. After a brief stint in the Irish militia, he continued work on the family farm before seeking opportunities across the Atlantic, moving to Philadelphia in 1768. Patterson began working as a schoolmaster outside the city in Buckingham, and in 1774 he became principal of the Wilmington Academy in Delaware. During the Revolutionary War, his principal duties went on hold and Patterson enlisted in the Delaware militia, where he served until 1778. The following year, he became Professor of Mathematics at the newly dubbed University of the State of Pennsylvania. Patterson served in that post until 1810, then worked as professor of natural philosophy and mathematics (1810-1813), and vice provost (1810-1813). During his time at the university, he earned an honorary Master of Arts degree (1788), and honorary Doctor of Laws degree (1819). Patterson also became involved with the American Philosophical Society: he served as secretary (1784), vice president (1799), and president (1819). He resigned his positions as professor and vice provost of the University of Pennsylvania in 1814, and his son and fellow APS member, Robert M. Patterson then filled his empty offices. He died in Philadelphia ten years after retiring.
