Jean-Joseph Sue (374)

Election date: 1779

Jean-Joseph Sue (20 April 1710—15 December 1792) was an anatomist, professor of surgery and member of the American Philosophical Society, elected in 1779. Born in La Colle, France, Sue rose to prominence as a professor at the Royal Academy of Surgery and the Académie de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris.  Working under these institutions, Sue produced many anatomical prints and a celebrated translation of Alexander Munro’s Anatomy of the Bones.  He was elected in 1760 to the Royal Society and became a Foreign Founding Member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1783.  His legacy as an anatomist would be continued by two of his Children, Pierre Sue and Jean-Joseph Sue Jr, the latter becoming an APS member as well.
