M.J.A.N. Caritat Condorcet (367)

Election date: 1775

Marie-Jean-Antoine-Nicolas de Caritat, Marquis de Condorcet (17 September 1743–29 March 1794) was a philosopher, writer, and a member of the American Philosophical Society, elected in 1775. Born in Ribemont, France, Condorcet studied at the Jesuit college in Reims and the College of Navarre in Paris, excelling in mathematics. Joining the Academie des Sciences in 1769, he quickly entered the heart of French intellectual society: contributing to papers of various subjects, assisting in preparations for the Encyclopédie, becoming a permanent secretary of the Academie des Sciences (1777), and joining the French Academy (1782). In 1768 he married Sophie de Grouchy, who ran Hôtel des Monnaies, one of the foremost salons at the time. The two shared many philosophical and political convictions and formed a strong intellectual partnership. Both readily welcomed the French Revolution, during which Condorcet represented Paris in the Legislative Assembly. He helped implement a state education system and various other reforms until the more moderate Girondins, whom he represented, fell out of favor, and the Jacobins thereby forced Condorcet into hiding. While in exile, he developed and published his thoughts on human progress, and his opposition to the institutions of slavery, the church, and monarchy. Notably, Condorcet was also an advocate for women’s rights: he strongly rejected the commonly-held belief of the time that women were intellectually and physically inferior, and even went so far as to support equal rights for women under the law. While trying to escape Jacobin spies, Condorcet found himself captured and imprisoned, and died mysteriously two days later. (EB, et al.)

Editions:

Editions Note:

At least two editions: one in 1811 in Philadelphia and one in 1819 in Paris.
Originally written in French about 1807. Later the manuscript was "committed" to Thomas Jefferson, by whom the present translation was revised and forwarded to Duane. The French edition appeared in 1819 under title: Commentaire sur l'Esprit des lois. cf. Gillbert Chilnard's Jefferson et les indeologues, 1925, p. 45-55.
Attributed in NUC pre-1956 to Antoine Louis Claude Destutt de Tracy. The author's note on p. [1] to "his fellow citizens of the United States of America" states that he is a Frenchman who "flying then from the tyrannies of the monster Robespierre, I found, and still enjoy, safety, freedom, and hospitality, among you." There is, however, no record that Destutt de Tracy ever left France.
The word "thirty-first" in the title is an error for "twenty-ninth," which is correctly given at the beginning of Condorcet's Observations on p. 261, and on the t.-p. of the French edition of this work, Paris, 1819.

Holding Note: APS holds two copies of the 1811 edition, one of which was presented by John Vaughan, June 1815, as well as a second autographed and presented by Peter S. DuPonceau, June 1841. This copy contains an extract of a letter from Thos. Jefferon to Professor Cooper, dated Monticello, Jan. 16, 1814 in which Jefferson explains that he has the original French manuscript of the Commentary, that Gen. Duane translated and edited it, but that the authorship must be anonymous until after the author's death. APS also holds an 1819 edition presented by the author, December 1819.
