Benjamin Morgan (341)
Election date: 1774Benjamin Morgan (?–?) was a businessman, manager, and a member of the American Philosophical Society, elected in 1774. Beginning in 1770, Morgan worked as one of the managers of the Philadelphia Silk Filature, which regularly did business with Benjamin Franklin. Despite receiving criticism for marrying a non-Quaker, Morgan’s career remained seemingly unaffected. The same year as his marriage scandal, he became Manager of the Corporation for the Relief and Employment for the Poor (1772), a member of the APS two years after that, and then Manager of Philadelphia Almshouse and House of Employment (1776). He may have also been working as an iron merchant around 1791.
