Daniel Coxe (321)
Election date: 1772Daniel Coxe (1741-1826) was a lawyer, and a member of the American Philosophical Society, elected in 1772. Born to a prominent merchant family in Trenton, New Jersey, Coxe practiced law in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He was admitted to the Philadelphia bar in 1757 and the New Jersey bar in 1761. Coxe remained a Loyalist throughout the Revolutionary War, which resulted in General Howe commissioning him as a magistrate of police during the British occupation of Philadelphia. He relocated to New York with the British army in 1778. While in New York, Coxe was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Associated Loyalists. He also served as the assistant secretary for the King’s Commissioners for Restoring Peace to the Colonies until the British withdrew from New York. Following the war, Coxe fled to England in 1783, where he remained until his death. Coxe’s cousins Tench and John were also members of the American Philosophical Society.
