Election date: 1769John Matthew Otto (9 November 1714–29–9 August 1785/1793) was a physician, and a member of the American Philosophical Society, elected in 1769. Born in Meiningen, Germany, Otto studied medicine in Augsburg, Germany before moving to Pennsylvania. Landing in Bethlehem in 1750, he began working as a physician, surgeon, chemist, and pharmacist on the Moravian settlement there. His services were sought after as far as Philadelphia and he became well known in the scientific circles there, leading to his election to the APS.
